Reflecting on the Mid-Terms Elections
On Wednesday, December 5th, the Global Policy Institute and BAU International University, in partnership with the City College of New York (CCNY), co-hosted a special event on The Implications of the Mid-Term Elections. Dr. Andrew Rich, faculty adviser to the CCNY Washington D.C. Interns Program was the speaker.
The Global Policy Institute President Paolo von Schirach delivered opening remarks.
As Dr. Rich explained in the course of a compelling, clear and well received presentation, enriched with charts and figures, whether you call this a “Blue Wave”, (the Democrats took over the House), a GOP hold, (The Republicans consolidated their slim majority in the Senate), or something in-between, there are broader political signals that we can detect in the aftermath of these Mid-Term Elections.
Most notably, Rich pointed out, the Democrats recovered lost ground by winning many state legislatures and regained some governorships, this way reversing a negative trend. Furthermore, looking at who voted for whom, it seems that the GOP is counting more and more on the important but narrow support of working class white men, and very few women. If this trend continues on a national basis, the Democrats will have the votes of most women, and all minorities. Without major policy changes aimed at broadening its appeal, given current demographic trends, it will be hard for the GOP to re-establish itself as the majority party on a national base, relying only on a shrinking segment of the American electorate.
Dr. Rich is an expert on American politics. He is a former chair of the CCNY Political Science Department, and the author of numerous publications on the role of interest groups, experts, and ideas in the U.S. policy-making process. Rich also currently serves as the Executive Secretary of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, an independent federal agency that provides merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service.
